Ephemera related to Stanley Kubrick's Masterpiece of Modern Horror, 'The Shining'

Clip from Victor Sjöström’s 1921 Swedish silent film Phantom Carriage.

This sequence, in which an alcoholic father hacks his way into a bathroom with an axe, is often mentioned as being a direct influence on Kubrick in his conception of the scene in The Shining where Jack uses an axe to try to get at Wendy and Danny.

It’s hard to ignore how similar the sequences are, although one can argue that this scene was itself influenced by a scene in D.W. Griffith’s 1919 film Broken Blossoms.
