Rachel Elkind and Walter (later Wendy) Carlos, photographed by Jack Robinson.
Carlos and Elkind collaborated on a complete soundtrack for The Shining, but Kubrick ended up using only two of their complete tracks, “The Shining” (Main Title), and “Rocky Mountains”.
Additionally, Kubrick and music editor Gordon Stainforth used fragments from other ambient tracks, including one titled “Heartbeats and Worry”. Portions of this track were used to score Jack’s journey into Room 237 as well as the scene in which Wendy tries to get through to a catatonic Danny, which is intercut with Dick Hallorann’s journey from Florida to Colorado.
It is Elkind’s eerily manipulated voice that can be heard in The Shining’s haunting opening track.
