One of dozens and dozens of concepts rendered by designer Saul Bass on the path to creating the iconic poster image for The Shining. Kubrick clearly favored this pointillist approach, which ended up being used in final design.
Hand-written notes are by Stanley Kubrick, and read: “Don’t like artwork.Hotel looks peculiar. Also artwork too spread out, too sprawling - not compact enough” and “I don’t like the dots for the logo. It will not look good small. Even the size above is difficult to read.”
Many of Saul Bass’s concept sketches can be viewed at the Stanley Kubrick Exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
